I also support the GST move. The digital India movement by the government of India is praiseworthy by every means. Our governments and departments are competent enough to tackle any change in system.
SOLUTION: Customs should have MULTIPLE card reading machines/ePayment readers at airports. Period.
A simple and obvious one.
Multiple because we know the age old excuse- “ek he machine hai aur woh kharab hai” (There is just one machine which is malfunctioning). These machines should be in stalls which are visible to everyone. This will bring more transparency in the way of dealing.
Customs-payers should get SMS/emails with details of the item.
This move will also help the government to know better how many devices/ornaments etc are coming from abroad.
There can be airport coupons provided to those who paid customs cashless.
The challenges
Are you kidding me?
We had the demonetization on 8th November 2016 and we expected all out autowallas, sabziwallas, phoolwallas, chat pakodi wallas to go cashless from 9th November.
Why cannot customs do the same in a matter of few days? If this is not possible, customs should be fined or some people need to be fired!
Final Note
Not all officers and people are corrupt but not all are honest too. A system is in a way where it is made easy to escape the customs. There seems to be no motivation from the customs department to work on these. Is that for the obvious reasons?
Digitize customs ASAP. Bring more transparency. An honest taxpayer cannot always be on the receiving side.
